Technical Information

Technical information relating to specific products and how to use them is given in the Products section. There follows a very brief summary of regulatory and other matters that need to be considered including how to deal with the conflict which can arise between building regulations written for new buildings and what is good for old buildings.

It needs to be remembered that Listed Building Consent is required for alterations to all listed buildings, whether the work is internal or external. It is generally advantageous to make the items of work covered by the application as detailed as possible as this will assist builders and other contractors to charge for their work without the addition of VAT.

Planning consent is required for many external alterations to buildings within Conservation Areas, but unless the building is also listed, VAT has to be charged on all work carried out.

There is often a potential conflict between Building Regulations, which are specifically written for New Build, and alterations to older buildings. We can advise on a range of materials, which are sympathetic to traditional building principles and which can satisfy Building Control Officers.
